Headphone, mixamp and sound card combo questions.

About a year ago, I bought the astro a40 2013 bundle of headset and mixamp, along with an asus xonar dx soundcard. The bundle was a good price at the time, and I thought the mixamp would be useful in future. However I am now planning on an upgrade to a pair of ath ad700's, and have a couple of questions. What settings should I use for my soundcard, and will the mixamp improve, or worsen my sound quality.

The reason that I am concerned that the mixamp may worsen sound, is that it is designed to be used with consoles, which at the time of release only support 5.1 sound under optical as the highest quality option. And the mixamp was designed to control eq settings, and upscale 5.1 virtual surround to 7.1 virtual channels. This leads me be concerned that the mixamp is processing all sound from the sound cards signal, and thus, the quality could be almost entirely dependent on the mixamp. Does anyone know if this upscaling would cause quality issues?

good stereo sound is superior to 5.1 virtual for gaming purposes,

better clarity at higher db rating = fragging, unfortunately feral you bought into the marketing

Bogz, this headset combo was a placeholder that I got for a good deal. I was wondering if the mixamp would take over from the soundcard and worsen my audio quality. Or add to it's positional accuracy.

From what I could find, I should also set my audio to pcm rather then dolby headphone to stop compressing channels, and get rid of as much virtualisation as possible, while running 8 audio channel signal.

any reasons why you are upgrading to the ad700s?? a40's are quite expensive... why not just use the bundle that u already have..

I got this bundle refurbished for about 100 bucks. It's a place holder for me. At the moment I am tossing up between the sennheiser 558's and the ad700's Having experienced the astro's they are fairly good for a cinematic experience, but I find detail and clarity to be lost as I can feel that they are quite "Weak" And that the bass is pushing over the top. Positional audio is also pretty good, but you just cant tell the distance away the sounds are.
