      Overwatch

      Hey all,

      So I got into the Overwatch beta this weekend. How many others are in it? I know Enigs is.

      My review and thoughts so far, ~40mins gameplay.

      You are all gonna hate me for saying this, but I really like it, it is a lot of fun and i am very excited for it to be fully released. I will outline my pro's and con's below but first.

      Servers
      Currently I am on the America's servers, they say that "While authentication is being handled on the America's server for this stress test, once logged in, the game will automatically place you into games on servers that are most appropriate for your region and ping." Whether this means that there are already OCE servers available and these are the ones we are redirected too I am not sure. I do notice that it feels a bit delayed sometimes, not to the extent of CS or BF on 200+ ping but it doesn't feel as crisp as if the servers were hosted in Syd. This could be due to game mechanics or because of server location/my shitty internet.

      Anyway onto the actual gameplay:
      So far from my limited game experience I have mostly been playing quick play and arcade (weekly brawl). The game modes that I have experienced so far are a rush style capture objective to progress to final point style and an escort cargo style similar to that in TF2. Both game modes are fun and push for teamwork as well as individual skill.
      What do I mean by this? Well you are able to individually outplay and kill lots of the enemy team if you are on a roll and playing an aggressive damage role, however this doesn't translate into an auto win. Due to class variety and respawn times, it is extremely hard to keep a team down for an extended period of time as an individual. The objectives are open area's which punish attackers for being there without proper control, this leads to the necessity for teamwork, whilst people are occupying the oppositions players the lack of cover means nothing and you can secure the objective easily. The best way to win so far in my eyes, is to have a balanced team and work off each other. Like most fps games it is a game of tug and war, you push when you have the advantage and defend when you dont.

      Onto classes:
      So far I have mostly been playing Reaper and Widowmaker these both fall into the damage category although fill very different roles in this category. From what I can see you have basically the classic trio of classes. Damage, Tank and Support, however what is nice is that there is a very large variety in each of these classes.
      • You have your damage sources such as Reaper, Widowmaker, Tracer, Pharah, Hanzo etc. But each of these provides a very different execution on the role and their abilities and weapons make them ideal in specific situations.
      • Your tanks are the damage absorption with shields and significantly more health than your damage they provide your meat shields, but can still punish the enemy for being out of position. Guys like Reinhardt, Winston, Roadhog will cause massive issues if they can get on the objective or in your face when they have support.
      • Your supports are your healers, utility and buffing characters. They provide benefits to the team through either player - player interactions (healing etc) or by utility and control (turrets etc). Their strengths rely on having a strong team which they can compliment and boost.


      The movement in the game is very smooth and fluid, like TF2 the maps are relatively basic, nothing overly complex but they work very well. Each character has unique movement abilities, these can include, leaps, flying, dashes, teleports etc. They allow you to utilise the maps in different ways.

      The maps are relatively linear in overview but with great detail and multiple routes throughout the map so sole choke points are not overly common. This allows the different classes to utilise their movement abilities to position themselves into locations which suit their kit, eg widowmaker lining up a corridor from an elevated ledge towards the back of the objective.

      The diversity from classes and characters will provide replay-ability and combined with good maps and game modes to compliment the maps will hopefully make it into a very solid and competitive game which we see continue to grow and improve.

      Final thoughts - good game, look forward to playing it more and seeing it on release.

      Been in the beta for a while, but haven't played too much. It's good fun, but have struggled a bit with uncoordinated pub teams. Definitely requires some coordination or you get annihilated.
